The Design Of The Magazine

I am finally at the point where I can build my magazine from the photos and research (Hooray).

The Front Cover

This is my basic plan for my magazine front cover and is only a basic look at how I might lay out the magazine. I feel that this is a very important step as it gives you a very good idea of how things are going to be lay out, when you have the assets on the cover it is hard to see where things lie spatially.
Doing this you can also see what goes well when it comes to the colour scheme. This I feel is also very important as again when all the assets are on screen its hard to see what does and doesn't go. I next started to add on the text deciding on a fuller font that looks stylised and has connotations with a verity of things from war to the rock culture. When typing I realised the font seemed "off" somehow and on further examination of other magazines I realised it was only a subtle thing that was wrong and that was the spacings between the letters and the words. It was a simple fix but made me realise that editing is more than the overall design of the cover but also a lot of tweaking. I added a poster offer as this is a very common convention in rock magazines in the west and shows predominantly on almost every kerrang magazine you can see. The poster offer draws in a younger crowd overall, think of the stereotypical teen with posters across the walls. One issue i had was choosing a main image. I chose an image from my shoot and edited it, intensifying the red in her hair and changing to colour of her clothing all so that the images colour scheme matches that of the front cover as a whole, if i did not do this there would seem to be some sort of discourse between the image and the cover and it would again be a case of something being wrong without any obvious issue.
when choosing the colour scheme I had to look at the what the connotations of the colours where in both western and easter cultures after a while of research I decided on a four colour scheme of black, white, red and yellow. Back and white coming as standard on most covers as black on white or viscera is one of the easiest combinations for reading text. I chose red as in both eastern and western culture it has a connection and connotation with blood and by extension death. This is something that this sort of subculture tries to connect to. I japan the colour of red is a very "evil" colour depending on the context in which it is displayed, unlike in the west where redo can be also about love or even royalty red. I chose yellow because it is a perfect compliment to red and goes very well with it.
Even though I liked the mystery of my main image, my target audience did not. When I showed my cover to my target audience the main criticism was about the main image. I improved this and my text and layout for my final draft.

Contents Page

Building the contents page was a more simple job, building the basics with the basic shape tool and then using the rotation tool just to make it look less basic and add more complex. The font was a similar job using century for the main text. The image I put a layer with a metal texture at 2.5% opacity so that the image has more depth to it. adding drop shadows to the shapes went a long way to make the page seem like it had more depth and gave it a more three diminutional look to it.

The image I chose connotes the feeling of fun and still embeds itself in to the rock culture due to the fact that he is just rocking out to air guitar. I used the mask tool to change the colour of his clothing again to go with the page and its over all colour scheme.

I liked my first draft but it needed some improvements to make it look more professional I added a subscription advert for the magazine, changed the font for a more rebellious one and added a illustration I made using a Tablet and Photoshop.

Double Page Spread

I made this page using the same method as the others by placing simple shapes on screen and then rotating them and changing there shape to look more visually pleasing. The white spaced i used for text and buy adding a drop shadow in the way I did you get a better looking cover because when a cover seems more 2D it looks more dull and people tent to like the look of a more 3D and layered page. In this page it still has the same colour scheme however the red is more subtly placed as it is only in the main images instead of in any objects or shapes. This choice came from my want to not distant the audience from the article and yet still draw them to the pictures.

The first draft didn't look at eye catching as I thought it would from my planning. I changed the design of the layout to follow more of the conventions I looked at during researching. I also used a Japanese translator program on the internet to add some phrases in Japanese to show the genre and attract my target audience more.
